Quick reference about organic produce

If you’re looking to cut costs on produce wherever you can, head to http://www.foodnews.org — they just updated their Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides “cheat sheet,” which lets you know which fruits and veggies are most contaminated versus least. There’s a long version and one that’s small enough to stick in your wallet.

Personally, I try hard to buy organic on most items for the sake of my son and husband (my husband is very sensitive to pesticide residue), but also don’t want to buy anything organic if I don’t have to to keep our grocery bill down. For example, I always, always buy organic salad greens, celery and pretty much everything else in the “Dirty Dozen” list on the cheat sheet above, but I do buy things like onions, peas, cabbage and sweet potatoes from time to time that aren’t organic. And I’ll buy certain organic legumes in bulk because they’re often the same price or close to it as the regular stuff, but I’ve also been known to raid the 10 for $10 beans at my local Super Stop & Shop without any concern because beans aren’t as plagued with pesticides by far.
